Abstract:System control is crucial for virtual reality applications and is usually realized via graphical menus, which are sometimes implemented on mobile devices. However, most studies on menus for mobile devices were published way before smartphones evolved to everyday companions. Thus, we implemented a platform-independent menu system for smartphones and evaluated it in two experiments. First, we performed an expert review in order to identify potential design flaws and second, we conducted a user study to test user acceptance. The results of the studies were contradictory: while experts appreciated the system very much, user acceptance was lower than expected.
